Over the years, I’ve found that there are many “perks” to being one of the co-founders of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. One of those is having the opportunity to meet wonderful and interesting people. The other – free stuff. Books, music, movies and games show up occasionally in my mailbox and I always chortle to meself, “Har-har-har!” (I chortle) “Free swag!”
And sometimes, the free stuff comes from some of those most wonderful pirate mates that we’ve met. A veritable harmonic convergence of piratty goodness!
Such was the case last week when, “The Book of Pirates: A Guide to Plundering, Pillaging and Other Pursuits” by Jamaica Rose and Captain Michael MacLeod (published by Gibbs Smith) found its way into my post box.
Captain Michael and Jamaica Rose (a.k.a. Michael and Christine Markel Lampe) have long been on our short list of “go to” people when it comes to pirate facts and lore. They are both students of history (especially pirate history) and warm, friendly people who never seem shaken or dismayed by even the stupidest questions. (And believe ye me, we’ve tested that over the years.)
The Book of Pirates is both whimsical and wondrous! The reader gets not only history – but “how to” as well. It is a beautifully bound and illustrated volume of everything that a reader might want to know about pirates.
The Book of Pirates is a delightful reference book and easily accessible for younger readers. Jamaica and Captain Michael keep the writing crisp and to the point. Their love of pirate history, of pirate lore – of all things “pirate” is clear on every page and even readers who have not had the pleasure of meeting them will know – they both possess something about pirates that has remained true over centuries. Something unchanged by myth and legend. They possess the pirate soul.
